2007: BusinessWeek 50---Varian was named number 14 in the BusinessWeek 50 listing, the magazine's ranking of the nation's best-performing large public corporations in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index. "These star performers in the class of 2007 are setting the agenda in their industries," the magazine stated. "This year's list is chock full of companies that are rewriting the rules in their industries. They are the agitators, the pioneers, and the game-changers that are leading the way in the 21st century."
2006: R&D 100 Award from R&D magazine, for the company's On-Board Imager® device for image-guided radiotherapy. The "R&D Awards" are widely known to industry, government, and academia as a mark of excellence demonstrating that a product realizes one of the most innovative ideas of the year.
2006: Forbes "Global High Performer," a distinction given by Forbes magazine to "big companies that are absolutely great at what they do." Varian was named "Global High Performer" in the health care equipment and services category.
2006: Silver Mercury Award from the International Academy of Communications Arts and Sciences for the company’s trade show exhibit at the 2006 ASTRO (American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology) annual meeting. The Mercury Awards are an international competition honoring excellence in public relations and corporate communications.
2004: Forbes “Platinum 400” list and "Best Managed Health Care Equipment and Services Company" for 2003. Forbes magazine added Varian Medical Systems to its prestigious "Platinum 400" list, and then named Varian the "Best Managed Health Care Equipment and Services Company" for 2003. To create the annual Platinum list, Forbes looked at both long- and short-term financial returns, plus other performance and valuation measures. The magazine then selected one company as the best managed of its group.
2004: Salt Lake City/Pollution Prevention Award. Varian's X-Ray Products business received a pollution prevention award for pollution prevention efforts in 2003. This was Varian's fourth year winning this award.
2004: Indo American Physicists' Organization Award "in recognition of outstanding contributions to radiation oncology," for the company’s leadership in developing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for treating cancer.
2003: Special Achievement Award from Design News magazine, in their national engineering award competition for the company’s development of high-resolution IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) for the treatment of cancer.
