Other System Requirements

In-Room Monitors:

20-21" diagonal measure or greater, Super VGA, 1024x768 pixels, 256 colors, non-interlaced.

Patient Check-In Monitor:

17-21" touch-screen monitor with mouse emulation functionality. Used with compatible workstation for lobby patient self check-in. Should have 1024x768 pixels, 256 colors and >75Hz refresh rate

Bar Code Reader:

Varian has tested and approved the Metrologic MS9540 USB Voyager Scanner for use with Patient Check-in and will be shipping this type of scanner when ordered from Varian.

Network Infrastructure:

Consult a network specialist who can do a network design for expanding current networks as well as planning for near and long term needs. Varian recommends category 5 cabling using an Ethernet 100Base-TX (twisted pair) topology, and TCP/IP for the network protocol. Infrastructure is the responsibility of the customer. This includes network cabling and other connectivity devices, such as hubs, switches, routers, bridges, protocol adapters, etc. Network design can be complex. Consultants who specialize in network design can assist you with near- and long- term plans. They can also assist with the connection of your department network to others at your facility. Appropriate network firewalls should be used for security. High volumes of network traffic, such as constant polling with certain protocols and diagnostic image transfers can adversely affect the performance of the information system. There are many ways to segment LAN traffic. A network design consultant can assist with the correct choices for your environment. (see note 1)

Wide Area Networking:

VARiS and ARIA support wide area networks. Consult a network specialist or the phone company for assistance in setting up this type of service.

Printers:

Varian recommends purchasing only Windows-compatible 600 DPI or greater laser printers. (600 dpi resolution is required.) Printer capabilities are dependent upon the types and volume of reports desired. For performance reasons, the database server should not be configured as a print server. One department network printer, one local printer per 4D Integrated Treatment Console (for chart printouts), and a local printer for the receptionist, are recommended. For label printing, Varian has approved the Zebra LP2824 USB/Serial Label Printer for use with the Bar Code labels.

Medical Image Printer:

A high-quality dye-sublimation process printer to produce B/W or color images with color overlays on both paper and transparencies.

Archive Storage Device:

Single Magneto Optical (read-write) 2.6GB drive with SCSI interface. Provides convenient storage media for permanent archive of patient records. A single optical drive will hold approximately 100 patient records with images, and 10,000 patient records without images.

Digital Camera or Scanner:

Any device capable of producing a photo image in .BMP file format. Film photos can be scanned and digitized, but do not provide the convenience of a digital camera. Both devices require the use of software not supplied with VARiS or ARIA to acquire, store and enhance the photos. Varian recommends using monochrome or 8-bit (256) color images only. Use of 24-bit color photos will significantly reduce available disk space and not improve overall photo quality.

Film Scanner:

12 or 8-bit greyscale 14" x17" film digitizer.

NOTES:
1. The 4D Integrated Treatment Console, Verification Interface, and Database Server computers should be isolated into a separate collision domain. Connect these devices together on same intelligent Ethernet switch, to reduce contention from any non-information system traffic.
2. Specifications subject to change without notice every 6 to 9 months as newer computer models become available.
